Sunil Gavaskar, former India captain, criticised Indian spinners for bowling multiple no-balls during the last Test series against Sri Lanka. Following the matches, the issue of recurrent overstepping at the crease became a topic of conversation, with Gavaskar emphasising the importance of taking immediate action to rectify the recurring problem.

Sunil Gavaskar addressed his worries in extensive commentary, underlining that bowlers had complete control over their movements at the crease.

He argued that with modern measurement instruments for marking run-ups, there should be no valid reason to overstep the bowling crease. According to the former opener, taking guard and avoiding no-balls are two of the few facets of cricket that a player has complete control over.

Why did Sunil Gavaskar reject the free-hit solution?

India’s spin bowling coach joked that providing free-hits in Test cricket will help curb no-balls. Gavaskar strongly opposed this suggestion, claiming that it would make it easier for batters to score runs at a time when the game already favours batting due to other restrictions. He cited existing restrictions that have already shifted the balance toward the batting side.

Sunil Gavaskar proposes fine organization and team discipline.

Instead, Sunil Gavaskar recommended a financial solution to address the reoccurring issue of no-balls. He suggested imposing fines that would grow with each subsequent infringement, as well as a penalty for the bowling coach equal to half of the player’s fine amount. According to his proposal, the fines collected might be used to pay for the team’s final dinner before the players left.

Beyond no-balls, Gavaskar proposed a broader framework for team discipline through financial sanctions. He added that additional on-field violations, such as neglecting to back up for a throw, should result in fines.

Sunil Gavaskar suggested that the entire squad vote on whether to impose such penalties, turning the procedure into a team-bonding exercise that could improve squad cohesion.
