India’s opener Rohit Sharma failed to score a substantial total in the second One-Day International against England at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Thursday, July 16, 2026. Despite a promising start, Virat Kohli left the team exposed after scoring 26 off 47 deliveries. Dodda Ganesh, a former India bowler, reviews Rohit Sharma’s innings.

Rohit Sharma was unexpectedly removed due to his inability to time the ball. He gloved the ball into the hands of wicketkeeper Jos Buttler after attempting to sweep a Will Jacks delivery. Rohit and Kohli had previously scored 40 runs for the second wicket. Rohit, who struggled at first, began to find his rhythm, while Kohli appeared to be in perfect touch.

Ganesh stated that Rohit Sharma’s slower-than-usual innings could be due to pressure to keep his status in the team. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Rohit in such a mindset during ODIs. “Probably the pressure of keeping his position is on his mind,” Ganesh wrote on X.

India’s top-order problems are exacerbated by Rohit Sharma’s troubles.

The opening batsman’s dismal performance throughout the series raises the question of how well he operates in unfamiliar surroundings. After hitting 11 from 21 balls in the first ODI at Edgbaston, Rohit Sharma edged Sam Curran to Harry Brook. Before he could accelerate or establish himself as the chase’s anchor, his innings ended.

His place at the top of India’s batting order during a key series in which the team is leading 1-0 has been called into question following back-to-back dismissals.

The right-handed batsman’s obvious deviation from the aggressive style that defined his hitting during the 2023 World Cup raises severe worries.

Although the more cautious technique has yielded runs, it has not always resulted in dominant innings that may give India an advantage during the powerplay. India will rely on their seasoned opener to deliver when it matters most in the forthcoming third ODI.
