England dismissed Pakistan for 171 at Headingley, with opening bowlers Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue each taking five wickets in the same Test innings. Robinson took 5-51 and Tongue finished with 5-46 as Pakistan’s batting crumbled under constant assault from England’s seam attack.
Pakistan was bowled out in 48.1 overs, with the last eight wickets falling for only 74 runs. The performance was a watershed moment for England’s seam bowling attack.
Robinson trapped Azan Awais lbw with the first ball of the Test, becoming the first wicket to fall to an opening delivery in England in 19 years, and also dismissed Shan Masood throughout his spell.
Robinson’s five-wicket haul was his fifth in Tests, bringing his total to 88 wickets at an average of 21.25. The 32-year-old had previously taken seven wickets at Lord’s against New Zealand in June. Tongue’s breakthrough came when he dismissed Imam, which precipitated the collapse of Pakistan’s lower hierarchy.
The ball-splitting moment
After the final wicket fell, Robinson and Tongue went off the pitch together, debating who would take the match ball home as a souvenir. Rather than settle the dispute by traditional means, the two bowlers opted to split the ball in half. England squad manager Wayne Bentley brought it to the ground personnel, who cut through the seam in five minutes, allowing both players to preserve a piece of the historic souvenir.
Tongue said that Robinson suggested sharing the match ball after the pair had each taken five wickets. The ground personnel split the ball into two pieces, enabling both bowlers to keep one as a memory of their amazing performance.

Robinson revealed to media that he came up with the concept while the two bowlers were leaving the pitch after Pakistan’s defeat.

Robinson and Tongue became the first English duo to take five wickets in a single Test innings against Pakistan at Old Trafford in 2006, when Steve Harmison and Monty Panesar did the same. This last performance demonstrated the strength of England’s seam bowling attack at Headingley.
