As the team has been accustomed to competing long in advance of major events, expectations have naturally increased. Kagiso Rabada, a South African pacer, argues that competing in a home World Cup should not be viewed as an additional duty. Rather, the fast bowler believes it can give South Africans a sense of sovereignty and duty to defend their country.
The much-anticipated ICC ODI World Cup 2027 would be co-hosted in eight places in South Africa, three in Zimbabwe, and one in Namibia. This is Africa’s first ODI World Cup since 2003, when South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya co-hosted the event. Nations will compete for the sport’s best one-day international title in a 14-team format.
“Well, I think there’s a lot more to it at the moment with us hosting it,” Rabada told the ICC during the official Cricket World Cup 2027 venue and brand announcement event in Johannesburg recently.
“It almost feels like liberation. I don’t feel pressured to win because we’re playing at home. It’s almost as if we’re at home and preparing to protect this castle. And that is what it means for me. It’s about representing the badge.
Inspired by the legendary Wasim Akram
One of the most inspiring moments for the South African fast bowler was Pakistan’s Wasim Akram’s game-winning session against England in the 1992 World Cup final at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Before Pakistan won their first World Cup, Akram made an outstanding performance in the final, dismissing Chris Lewis and Allan Lamb in quick succession. As a fast bowler himself, Rabada is still inspired by the legendary left-armer’s presence and intensity on the biggest stage.
“One World Cup moment that I’ll never forget, because I’m a bowler, was Wasim Akram’s final match against England. “He’s just cleaning up (the stumps) and putting on a show for his country, demonstrating his passion and skill,” Rabada said.
Rabada is certain to make the final move.
Rabada’s belief that the Proteas have the potential to win a big ICC tournament has been confirmed by South Africa’s recent performances.
“We’ve proved that we can compete in the finals and semi-finals. It’s just about the final step. So, the confidence is there. Rabada stated, “The belief is most definitely there; it’s just a matter of taking that extra step.”
