Australia has announced their XI for the second Test against Bangladesh at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay, maintaining Nathan Lyon in the lineup despite a genuine debate among selectors about fielding an all-seam attack for the venue’s Test debut. Matthew Renshaw is the only change from the lineup that lost by nine wickets in Darwin.

The mild winter weather in central Queensland had sparked speculation that Scott Boland would step in at Lyon’s expense. Pat Cummins informed media at the ground that selectors wanted more time to decide on their attack combination.Cricket.com.au quotes Cummins as stating, “Trying to give it another day to see if it’s four quicks or a spinner.”

Shortly following those statements, selectors gathered on the pitch to confirm Lyon’s place.

The last time Australia dropped a fit Lyon from a red-ball Test XI was 14 years ago at the WACA Ground. While the hosts used four seamers in a pair of pink-ball Tests in 2025, they elected not to repeat that strategy for this red-ball encounter in Mackay.

Why did Australia recall Renshaw to begin the batting?

Following the nine-wicket loss in Darwin, selectors avoided wholesale changes, keeping Marnus Labuschagne at No. 3 despite his recent poor form. Jake Weatherald was dropped after appearing in only the first match of Australia’s tough 20-Test calendar over the previous 12 months, and Renshaw’s return to the top of the order is the only definite change for Mackay.

Renshaw made his 14th and most latest Test debut in 2023, batting in the middle order during the India trip. His recall puts him back in the position where he made his reputation, opening the batting for a century against Pakistan in the 2016-17 home series when he was 20. Cummins discussed the larger selection concept after Darwin’s defeat. Many people immediately respond, ‘You have to win everything’ – which we definitely aim to achieve. We take great pride in winning as many home Test matches as possible. We weren’t at our best. But I believe Bangladesh played exceptionally well. “They’re a very good cricket team,” Cummins added.

What did pitch evidence in Mackay tell selectors about Lyon’s inclusion?

To determine how the Mackay surface may behave, Australia looked at film from a two-year-old encounter between Australia A and India A at the same venue. Brendon Doggett took six wickets on a lively opening-day surface, but the home team successfully chased 225 in the fourth innings, with off-spinner Manav Suthar, who has since won a spot in India’s Test squad, making little impact.

Cummins acknowledged the importance of the reference point but cautioned against over-reliance on it.It appeared that it became easier to bat as the game progressed, but that was a few years ago. You treat it as data, but it is not the (only) factor influencing the selection decision. Cummins observed that it is mostly condition-based.

Australia’s whole lineup for the second Test against Bangladesh in Mackay.

Matthew Renshaw, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Beau Webster, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.
