“After being on the road for the past seven or eight years, this is the longest break I’ve had. There have been instances when I tried to get things in order, but I simply ran out of time to properly commit to those minor modifications.”
Labuschagne stated. “Working on my game and spending hours and hours on the simple things like my shots, working on my shapes and my technique as a whole is something I definitely needed,” he said.
Technique and Attitude for Reset
The hitter is keen to correct a trend he’s spotted in his recent dismissals. Instead of allowing the game’s natural flow to guide his strategy, he has found himself searching too hard for scoring opportunities when the runs have stopped coming.
“After a few missed opportunities, you become greedy and start looking for runs instead of allowing the game to come to you. I’ve spent the previous two months reflecting on when I played my best cricket. It was simply letting the game come to me.” Labuschagne explained.

When Labuschagne returns to Test cricket, he emphasises the importance of keeping process over outcome. He prioritises achieving his goals over chasing benchmarks. We want the runs, but we also want the process, which is exactly what I am looking for.
Last summer, there were some dismissals due to rushing the procedure despite good performance. “You want to get to that three-figure score rather than staying in the moment,” Labuschagne explained.
For the first Test, Labuschagne is expected to bat third. Now, he is focusing on using the knowledge he gathered during his holiday and putting the approach he developed during his absence from international cricket into practice.
