Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out of South Africa’s three-match Test series against Australia following scans that revealed a complete or near-total rupture of his right hamstring muscle, a grade-three injury. Due to his 10-week rehabilitation time, he will be unable to participate in either of the home series.

South Africa will also host Australia in a three-match one-day international series, beginning on September 24 at Kingsmead. That series, too, is inside Kagiso Rabada recovery window.

How severe is the harm, and what is the immediate impact on South Africa?

A grade-three hamstring diagnosis is the most serious category of such injuries, involving significant muscle fibre damage and necessitating the most extensive therapy.

The Proteas had planned to use a four-day provincial match between the Lions and Boland on September 10 as a fitness test for Kagiso Rabada ahead of the Test series, but that preparation pathway is no longer viable due to the severity of the diagnosis.

According to SA Cricket Magazine, the injury adds to an already challenging scenario for South Africa’s pace attack. Nandre Burger is currently sidelined with a spinal stress fracture, leaving the Proteas without two of their premier fast bowlers at once.

Cricket South Africa was yet to designate a replacement for Kagiso Rabada  in the Test team, and no cover selection had been confirmed. The combined absence of Kagiso Rabada and Burger puts tremendous pressure on the selectors to seek pace options capable of leading the attack over three Tests against one of the world’s best batting lineups.

What does Kagiso Rabada record against Australia reveal about the magnitude of the loss?

Kagiso Rabada stats against Australia highlight why his absence is so significant. In 11 Tests against them, he has 58 wickets at an average of 21.39, ranking him among the most efficient bowlers in the history of this particular match.

His most recent high-profile performance was at Lord’s, where he took 9 for 110 in the 2025 World Test Championship final, showcasing his ability to deliver at the greatest level in the most important games.

Rabada has 340 wickets in his Test career, solidifying his position as South Africa’s top fast bowler of the present era. His Test count is still unresolved amongst sources and has been mentioned separately for editorial assessment.

With the first Test in Durban less than six weeks away, South Africa’s selectors face the challenge of assembling a pace attack without their most experienced and productive fast bowler.
