Joe Root Vows to Keep Bazball Core in Second Stint as England Test Captain

Joe Root was named England Test captain for the second time on July 30, with the England and Wales Cricket Board confirming the choice after Ben Stokes retired from international cricket. The 35-year-old takes over with newly appointed Test head coach Stephen Fleming, a former New Zealand captain who succeeds Brendon McCullum as red-ball head coach following the latter’s dismissal.

Root’s first task as captain will be a three-Test home series against Pakistan, which begins on August 19, 2026, at Headingley Stadium. Speaking ahead of the first Test, Root made it clear that he has no intention of abandoning the aggressive, upbeat approach associated with the Stokes-McCullum period, also known as Bazball.

He will, however, take over only in December for the South Africa series, with assistant coach Marcus Trescothick serving as temporary coach for the Pakistan series.
