Prior to the Pakistan series, Joe Root has lifted the curfew for England’s Test team and encouraged players to exhibit maturity and personal responsibility. Joe Root has returned to the role of captaining England, having previously served as the team’s leader from 2017 to 2022.
Joe Root has implemented a novel approach to team discipline in response to recent off-field incidents that have had an effect on the group. The three-match series commences at Headingley on August 19 and continues with Test matches at Edgbaston and Lord’s, as part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025–2027 cycle.
England’s Test team encountered alcohol-related complications subsequent to the away Ashes series in late 2025. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were suspended for curfew violations during the New Zealand Test series in the summer of 2026. This suspension was preceded by an altercation at a nightclub, which occurred subsequent to Stokes’ retirement from international cricket.
In July 2026, the ECB implemented new player behaviour rules that were approved by managing director Rob Key in response. These regulations stipulated that players were required to inform management if they departed the team hotel after 10 p.m., were prohibited from appearing in public while impaired, and were subject to a midnight curfew.
“There will be no curfew.” To be frank, I do not believe that this should be a significant issue. Root stated to Sky Sports, “My perspective on the curfew is that the players are fulfilling their obligations, and in order for them to assume responsibility on the pitch, they must feel that they can act as mature adults and make sound, responsible decisions off the pitch.”

Joe Root believes that the England team should be recognised for their on-field accomplishments and manner of play, rather than any off-the-field incidents.
He recommended that the players conduct themselves in a manner that is appropriate, prioritise the well-being of themselves and their teammates, and establish a robust team culture that recognises when it is appropriate to celebrate a victory or indulge in a beverage, all while remaining mindful of their responsibilities as England players.
He further stated that players should not feel guilty about celebrating a Test win or savouring a beer at the appropriate time, as they are also individuals.
“We should be recognised for our on-field performance and the manner in which we play cricket.” It is imperative that we appear on the rear page of the papers. Be mature, take care of yourself, and take care of one another.
Joe Root stated, “We must establish a strong, positive culture in which individuals are aware of the appropriate time to celebrate and savour a victory or to consume a reasonable beer. However, it is important to remember that one must represent England.”
“I do not wish for individuals to feel as tho they are unable to appreciate the outcome of a Test match because they wish to indulge in a beverage or, at the appropriate time, let their hair down.
This is entirely permissible.” Ultimately, we are human beings. You are aware of your obligations, the steps necessary to prepare for a test match, the resources required, and the potential consequences. Therefore, be intelligent, prudent, and simply behave like an adult,” he concluded.
