The International Cricket Council (ICC) is purportedly contemplating a reduction in the number of teams participating in the 2027 ODI World Cup from 14 to 12. This decision has prompted apprehension among Associate nations.
The development occurs amid ongoing discussions regarding the destiny of the 50-over format. The ICC has reportedly rejected proposals to reduce the duration of One-Day Internationals to 40 overs. However, discussions regarding the number of teams participating in the upcoming World Cup have gained momentum.
Despite having previously declared in 2021 that future tournaments would include 14 teams, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is currently considering a return to a 12-team World Cup, as reported by Tristan Lavalette.
South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will collaborate to host the 2027 World Cup. South Africa and Zimbabwe are anticipated to automatically qualify as hosts. However, Namibia’s participation in the tournament would not be guaranteed if the number of participating teams is reduced, necessitating that they undergo the qualification process.
The proposed change has also prompted apprehension among several Associate nations, such as Nepal, the United States, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada, as their prospects for obtaining a World Cup berth could be significantly diminished.
One senior administrator has issued a vehement critique of the proposal to reduce the tournament’s size, which has not been well received by the Associate cricket community.
“That would be revolting.” A senior administrator in Associate cricket informed Cricket Financial Journal that cricket has taken another step back after it appeared that progress was being made.
The comments are indicative of the increasing dissatisfaction among emerging cricket nations, particularly in light of the ICC’s previous commitment to expanding the tournament to offer more opportunities for team development on a global scale.
The proposition was discussed during the ICC’s meetings in Edinburgh, according to reports. Nevertheless, the governing body has not disclosed the rationale behind the discussions in public, and the proposal’s scope remains uncertain.
The top eight nations in the ICC ODI rankings, in addition to the hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, will qualify directly for the 2027 World Cup under the current qualification pathway. The path to the World Cup would be significantly more difficult for Associate nations if the number of participating teams were to decrease, as fewer qualification spots would be available.
It is uncertain whether the ICC will implement the proposed change or maintain the 14-team format that was previously announced, as the tournament is still over a year away.
