ECB Makes Key Adjustment To Injury Substitute Role After Review

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced two substantial changes to the injured substitutions rule, which was tested during the 2026 County Championship season in response to feedback from Professional County Clubs (PCCs) and the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA).

Injury and illness substitutes will only be allowed to teams in their first innings, unless the referee is notified that a player is being evaluated for an illness or injury. Rather than talent or experience, the successor must be comparable in terms of skill set.

“After reviewing the input from the first nine rounds of the Rothesay County Championship, the ECB board has approved the change from having an injury or illness replacement available throughout the match.

The ECB said in an official statement that both the Professional Game Committee (PGC) and the Cricket Advisory Group (CAG) welcomed the modification, which is meant to alleviate concerns that a side could gain an advantage by being able to bring on a new bowler for their second bowling innings.

“The CAG and PGC both suggested the criteria on which the match referee would authorise a substitute player.”This will not take into account the replacement player’s talent, experience, or record in contrast to the player being replaced.

It will be solely based on skill set, such as a hitter for a batter or a quick bowler for a quick bowler,” the statement added.

Earlier in the season, clubs were accused of attempting to dodge the rules by replacing bowlers at the end of games. Critics also pointed to Lancashire’s refusal to replace Ajeet Singh Dale with Tom Bailey, claiming that Bailey was a better hitter.

The adjustments for the remaining six rounds of the County Championship have been announced following approval from the PCC and PCA. The adjustments were also approved by the Professional Game Committee (PGC) and the Cricket Advisory Group (CAG).

“It was also determined that mid-season alterations would not jeopardise the integrity of the Rothesay County Championship, provided that all clubs had played the same amount of matches thus far and will participate in all remaining rounds upon the competition’s restart in August.”

Before deciding on the next course of action, the ECB will assess the trial’s overall results at the end of the season, including further feedback from stakeholders such as professional counties and the PCA,” according to the statement.

The standards for concussion substitutes and players experiencing big life events will be consistent throughout the season and available throughout games.
