Auqib Nabi Signs for Surrey Ahead of New Zealand Tour

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is in active discussions with English counties about arranging a short-term red-ball contract for bowler Auqib Nabi ahead of India’s Test visit of New Zealand in November. The BCCI wants Nabi to play at least two or three county matches in England before the tour begins.

Surrey is one of the counties in talks, with former England captain Alec Stewart, who leads the club, speaking with the BCCI about the agreement.

Auqib Nabi was picked to India’s Test squad for the Sri Lanka series previously, however he did not play in either match. If confirmed, a county stay will provide him with valuable red-ball experience ahead of a potential Test debut in New Zealand.

What achievements has Auqib Nabi made in domestic cricket that have earned him this opportunity?

Auqib Nabi was the leading wicket-taker in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, totalling 60 wickets. His best bowling stats that season were 7/24, and he had seven five-wicket hauls in total, including one in the final against Karnataka.

His bowling average of 12.56 in the 2025-26 season demonstrates the consistency and penetration he brought to every game. Nabi has taken 104 wickets in the two most recent Ranji Trophy campaigns, making him one of the most productive speed bowlers in Indian domestic cricket during that time.

Those figures piqued the interest of the national selection panel, which included him in the Test squad for the Sri Lanka series. His red-ball record at the domestic level makes the county transfer a natural next step in his preparation for international cricket.

What is the current state of Auqib Nabi England county move?

Auqib Nabi visa application for England has been submitted, but acceptance and his exact arrival date in England are still unknown as of August 29, 2026. The county arrangement has not yet completed, with negotiations between the BCCI and Surrey still ongoing.

The BCCI’s logic is simple: New Zealand wickets, like English ones, tend to allow speed bowlers lateral movement off the seam, making county exposure directly analogous to the conditions Nabi will face on tour. Two to three tough red-ball games in England would provide him a better preparation than any net practice could.

Separately, Gurnoor Brar has joined the North Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy semi-final against South Zone, which begins on November 30 at the BCCI Center of Excellence, as part of the larger domestic red-ball program that runs alongside these preparations.
