Aakash Chopra, a former India batsman, has expressed his admiration for Ravichandran Ashwin for publicly supporting Ajit Agarkar as India’s chief selector, despite the fact that Ashwin was one of the senior players who were phased out during Agarkar’s tenure. Agarkar has informed the BCCI of his decision to not pursue an extension of his contract as chief selector, which is scheduled to expire on October 4, 2026.
Ashwin acknowledged that Agarkar was required to make numerous challenging decisions during his tenure, such as the gradual retirement of senior players. Ashwin, despite being one of those players, stated that Agarkar had been an exceptional chairman of selectors.
Chopra responded to Ashwin’s comments by praising the former off-spinner for his humility and describing the gesture as a testament to his genuine character.
What was the reason for Aakash Chopra defence of Agarkar’s reputation as chief selector?
Aakash Chopra observed that Agarkar has encountered significant criticism during his tenure as chief selector, with numerous individuals making disparaging remarks toward both Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Aakash Chopra noted that Agarkar is contractually obligated to refrain from publicly disclosing the reasons behind each decision he has made, resulting in the fact that many of the realities behind his selections remain unknown.
Aakash Chopra also directly addressed the circumstances surrounding Ashwin’s retirement. Ashwin retired from Test cricket in December 2024 during the Border-Gavaskar series in Australia. He announced his retirement after the third Test at the Gabba in Brisbane and was dropped from the playing XI following the pink-ball Test in Adelaide.
