Kapil Dev maintains that Virat Kohli should have engaged in Test cricket for an extended period. The captain of the World Cup-winning team believes that Kohli could have continued his red-ball career after retiring in May 2025, despite the fact that he was only 770 runs short of the 10,000-run milestone in the format.
Kohli had already declared his retirement from T20I cricket after guiding India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma. Kohli’s consistency has remained extraordinary, despite the fact that he has only played ODI cricket for the national team since retiring from Test cricket in 2025.
“He appears to be in good health when he is playing.” His fitness is of paramount importance at this stage. Additionally, I believe that he has the potential to surpass all existing records if he can maintain his fitness for an additional two to three years. Secondly, I harbour sorrow for him. He withdrew from a test match. According to NDTV Sports, Kapil Dev stated, “I am uncertain as to the reason for his actions.”
“He is the most knowledgeable.” However, as a former cricketer and a spectator, I believe that he should have played more Test cricket, as he possesses the talent. Without a doubt. Indeed, it is not advisable for him to do so. He enjoys his game and is capable of evaluating it. He also stated, “I am uncertain as to whether or not he is experiencing distress today.”
Kapil Dev believes that Kohli has the potential to break every record if he maintains his physical fitness for the next few years.
Kohli’s premature retirement from the longest format was also put into doubt by the former all-rounder for India. Kapil Dev believes that the right-handed batter may come to regret his decision after a few years.
