Jason Holder, the all-rounder for the West Indies, abruptly announced his retirement from ODI cricket. Over the past two years, the former skipper has been in outstanding form, particularly in T20 cricket.
Even the two-time champions would struggle to find a substitute for Holder, despite the Caribbean’s reputation as the home of pace-bowling all-rounders.
However, since Holder last played in ODIs during the 2023 World Cup qualifiers, Cricket West Indies has moved on from him in the 50-over format.
West Indies head coach Daren Sammy disclosed Jason Holder’s covert retirement from ODI cricket during an interview on the Wisden Cricket podcast. The West Indies team manager added that the all-rounder is still undoubtedly in the running for Tests when he announced the retirement.
“Jason Holder is still being considered for the Tests. I am aware that he is no longer playing ODI cricket. Definitely test cricket. Daren Sammy stated on the Wisden Cricket podcast, “He has expressed his interest, and he is clearly our frontline all-rounder.”
Holder played 138 ODI appearances for the Windies as his career came to a conclusion. He amassed 2237 runs and claimed 159 wickets, including 12 half-centuries and five four-fers. He made his ODI debut in 2013 and was instrumental in both the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cups.
The all-rounder was crucial throughout the WC Qualifiers, scoring 144 runs and taking six wickets as the West Indies were unable to qualify for the 2023 World Cup in India. Furthermore, it ended up being the Barbadian’s final appearance in the format.
Why is Jason Holder being ignored in Test matches by the West Indies?
One of the West Indies’ top players in the 2026 T20 World Cup was Jason Holder. He took 10 wickets and scored 141 runs with a strike rate of 175, changing games several times.
Since then, the pace-bowling all-rounder has participated in two Twenty20 Internationals against Sri Lanka, but he hasn’t played in Tests since August of two years ago. This suggests that his recent performance is related to his absence from Tests. He had stated in September 2025 that he wanted to play for the Windies in the longest format.
In 69 Test matches thus far, the former Test skipper has scored 3073 runs and claimed 162 wickets for his country. After Sir Garfield Sobers, he is the only Windies player to reach the combination of 3000+ runs and 150+ wickets in Test cricket.
But instead of Holder, who primarily relies on precise line-and-length, the West Indies are currently choosing frontline fast bowlers who can rattle any batting order with their pace.
How much will Jason Holder be missed at the 2027 World Cup?
Currently serving in the MLC, Jason Holder just tied Lasith Malinga for fifth place in T20 cricket for the most four-fers. He can also bat anywhere from number 4 to number 7.
As they get ready for the 2027 World Cup, which will take place in South Africa, the West Indies would miss an all-rounder of Holder’s calibre in the ODI format.
On July 12, however, the Windies will start a new phase of the ODI series at home against New Zealand.
