The former captain of the England Women’s cricket team, Heather Knight, has declared her retirement.
At the conclusion of the current Test match against India at Lord’s, one of the most illustrious careers in English cricket will come to an end, joining long-time teammate Tammy Beaumont in retirement.
She has more appearances overall than any other female cricket player from England, with 15 Tests, 160 ODIs, and 145 T20Is. In 2010, she made her England debut at the age of eighteen, filling in for the injured Sarah Taylor during the India tour. She made her debut in the same game as Danni Wyatt-Hodge, having become an exciting batter after scoring a lot at the county level.
She has been a cornerstone of their batting since then, rising to the position of vice captain by 2014 and replacing Charlotte Edwards as full-time captain in 2016.
Her accomplishments increased over the following ten years, and she is most known for helping England win the 2017 ODI World Cup. In an ECB statement, Knight said, “I’m really grateful and privileged to have gone on the journey that I have been on as an England cricketer.
It’s hard to walk away because the dressing room and the people in the dressing room have been a constant in my life for 16 years, and the memories and the experiences and the people have helped shape who I am today. However, I’m really content with this decision and I’m really excited for what’s next.
“I’ve had the good fortune to play with some incredible cricket players as well as some incredible individuals who have helped, encouraged, and taught me a lot over my career.
My teammates, coaches, and support personnel have my sincere gratitude. I also like to thank the medical staff in particular. I have no idea how this physique has endured about 300 cricket matches. I owe them one because it’s taking a lot of mending and effort on their part.
After England’s 16-0 all-format loss to Australia in the Ashes last year, Heather Knight nine years as England’s captain came to a sad end. Despite competing in her fifth T20 World Cup this year and missing out on capturing another ICC trophy at home following their final loss to Australia, she continued to be an important member of the batting unit.
Heather Knight participated in four ODI World Cups, including the championship-winning campaign in 2017.
In both white-ball forms, he finished third in terms of runs scored. She became the first player from England, male or female, to score a century in all three international forms in 2020.Over the years, as a squad, we’ve had some memorable experiences with the supporters, and I want to thank everyone for their love and support of the women’s game,” she continued.

Heather Knight chose not to participate in the 2026 Women’s Hundred after being named general manager of the London Spirit women’s team in December of last year. Working with Mo Bobat to grow the franchise could be a natural next step for her.
As India strengthened their hold on the Test, Heather Knight, who was out for six in the opening innings, may now bat one final time at Lord’s. Regardless of how it turns out, the “little girl from Devon” will leave a lasting legacy for many years to come.
