The appointment of Shreyas Iyer as India’s T20I captain was seen as the beginning of a new era following Suryakumar Yadav‘s successful tenure, which resulted in India winning their third T20 World Cup. Having led the Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League, Iyer had a tremendous leadership history going into the role. However, international cricket presents a unique set of challenges, and some have questioned whether Iyer should continue to lead the T20I team in light of India’s recent performance.

India is currently experiencing one of their worst runs in the format after going five games without winning, including defeats to England and Ireland. The team lost 2-0 against Ireland in the current five-match series versus England before falling behind 0-2. Iyer’s leadership has come under heightened scrutiny because of the team’s inability to adjust under pressure, even though a captain cannot be held responsible for every defeat.

Should Shreyas Iyer be dropped from India’s T20I team?

Was he promoted to captain too quickly?

One of the primary points of contention is whether Shreyas Iyer was promoted too quickly. Despite his impressive IPL captaincy record, success in franchise cricket typically does not transcend to the international scene. India’s team included other potential captains.

Ishan Kishan has captaincy experience with Jharkhand in domestic cricket, although Tilak Varma has been a part of the national squad for a lengthier period and is regarded as a prospective leader. Despite these options, the selectors had faith in Shreyas Iyer because they thought his IPL success would carry over to international cricket. So far, that decision hasn’t produced the anticipated results.

Too many commitments?

As India prepares for the 2027 ODI World Cup, Shreyas Iyer also acts as the team’s ODI vice-captain. After assuming full-time T20I skipper, he might have been under extra pressure. Leading the team and being expected to bat regularly is a difficult task, particularly during a hectic international calendar. The additional responsibility has sometimes appeared to affect his decision-making and overall poise on the field.

Does his hitting change because he is captain?

The difficulty of captaincy, which frequently impacts a player’s individual performances, has been illustrated by Shreyas Iyer’s recent performance. He scored an outstanding half-century against England in the second Twenty20 International, but he hasn’t been able to deliver game-winning blows on a regular basis. Throughout the Ireland series, he didn’t make much of an impact with the bat, and his high-pressure performances haven’t lived up to expectations.

But after a difficult run, Iyer’s removal from the T20I team might be a difficult decision. Every captain goes through challenging moments, and he ought to be given the opportunity to learn from mistakes and respond firmly. The remaining games against England will decide whether he can ignite a turnaround. If the poor performance continues for a long time, the selectors may need to reconsider both his captaincy and his place in the T20I setup.
