Shreevats Goswami, a former wicketkeeper for the India U19 team, has contemplated Yuzvendra Chahal’s career and his banishment from the Indian Test cricket team. Shreevats Goswami discussed the evolution of India’s leg-spinners over the past few decades and compared some of the most talented cricketers.
He observed that Shane Warne’s spinner skills embody a different level of greatness in the game than Virat Kohli’s. “Shreevats Goswami compared Virat Kohli to the Ronaldo of cricket, and Shane Warne to the Messi of cricket, an absolute magician,” he said of Chahal’s career trajectory and the potential outcomes if the leg-spinner had been afforded opportunities in the longest format. Nevertheless, Chahal, who has not played in any Test matches for India, is perpetually on my mind. Shreevats Goswami remarked on the Beyond23 Cricket podcast, “He could have been one of the greats if he had played Tests.”
Shreevats Goswami employed sporting analogies to elucidate his thesis on the subject of cricket excellence.
It is astonishing that he has never played for India in a Test match. Amit Mishra was exceptional for a brief period. Nevertheless, India has not produced any exceptional leg-spinners since Kumble,” he continued.
Chahal’s absence from Test cricket
Chahal has never participated in a Test match for India, as the national team administration prioritised Kuldeep Yadav over him in the selection order for the longest format. The leg-spinner, who made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in June 2016, went on to become a significant member of India’s white-ball cricket team. Despite his success in limited-overs cricket, he has been unable to establish himself in Test cricket throughout his international career.

Throughout his international tenure, Chahal has achieved significant success in the field of limited-overs cricket. He achieved the distinction of becoming the first Indian and the second player in T20 International history to take six wickets, thereby demonstrating his success in the shortest format. He was a member of the Indian team that emerged victorious in the 2024 T20 World Cup, despite not participating in any games. Despite the demands of India’s spin-bowling standards and his local performances, his white-ball credentials remain strong; however, the Test door has remained closed.
