Rashid Khan has been sacked as Afghanistan’s T20I captain following the team’s group stage elimination from the 2026 T20 World Cup. The Afghanistan Cricket Board confirmed the move on March 5, 2026, designating Ibrahim Zadran as the new T20 skipper.

The board cited congruence with its long-term strategic vision and recent changes in club management, including the recruitment of a new head coach, as reasons for the captaincy changeover, without providing any other details. Rashid Khan stated that he was not consulted or notified by the board before the decision was made public.

Afghanistan’s elimination from the 2026 T20 World Cup in the group stage came before the board’s decision to alter the T20I skipper. The Afghanistan Cricket Board cited its long-term strategic goal and the recruitment of a new head coach as the reasons for the leadership move, but no specific justification was presented publicly.

Rashid Khan captained Afghanistan in 48 Twenty20 Internationals, winning 26 and losing 22. His most famous achievement as captain was leading the team to the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup, where they defeated the West Indies. Reflecting on his stint, Rashid stated,

How has Ibrahim Zadran fared as Afghanistan’s T20I captain?

Ibrahim Zadran, Afghanistan’s former T20I vice-captain, was named Rashid Khan’s replacement on March 5, 2026. His first assignment was a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka in Sharjah, which began March 13, 2026.

Afghanistan lost all three T20Is against India when Zadran was captain. Rashid continued to play in the series, taking four wickets for 113 runs at an economy rate of 9.82 across three games, but was unable to match his normal high standards.
