Abhishek Porel, the wicketkeeper-batsman for the Delhi Capitals, was released from 36 days of legal detention by the Chinsurah court on September 18, 2026. A Karnataka medical student filed a complaint at the Mogra police station on June 23, 2026, accusing Porel, 23, of criminal intimidation and rape. Porel was arrested on August 11, 2026.
The complainant purportedly recounted a nearly three-and-a-half-year romance with Abhishek Porel, during which they allegedly discussed marriage and planned trips abroad. She also stated that Abhishek Porel subsequently denied the existence of the relationship. The complaint was registered using Sections 66 and 72 of the Information Technology Act, as well as Sections 311 and 318 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The Calcutta High Court had previously directed the police to seize Porel and his electronic devices. When he initially appeared before a lower court, bail was denied, and he was subsequently held under judicial custody. Police also apprehended a woman and one of Abhishek Porel’s acquaintances as part of the same investigation. A dispute between the complainant and Porel had garnered police attention approximately one and a half years prior to the June 2026 allegation. Nevertheless, the incident concluded without the filing of a formal complaint. Porel has consistently denied all allegations that have been leveled against him.
What is the effect of Abhishek Porel’s bail on his cricket career?
In 2023, Abhishek Porel made his IPL debut with the Delhi Capitals. In the span of all IPL seasons, he has played in 35 games and scored 769 runs, with an average of 25.63 and a strike rate of 145.37. This includes four half-centuries. During the 2026 IPL season, he steered the team to 108 runs in four innings.
Abhishek Porel made his first-class debut for Bengal during the 2021–2022 season. He has participated in 32 first-class matches and 23 List A games for the state since that time. He was excluded from the Bengal team for the 2026–2027 domestic season, despite his record, prior to his imprisonment. The decision to resume competitive cricket at any level will be contingent upon the outcome of the ongoing legal proceedings and the decisions rendered by the relevant cricket boards.
What has been determined to be the subsequent phase of the legal process?
After the Chinsurah court granted him bail, Porel is no longer in judicial detention. However, the charges against him remain unresolved, and the case is still being adjudicated by the courts. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act allegations are still pending, and there are expected to be additional hearings in the upcoming weeks.
