India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, senior selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar, and Center of Excellence head VVS Laxman have been summoned to the BCCI’s Mumbai headquarters on Thursday, September 3, 2026, for a detailed evaluation of the national team’s recent overseas performances.

The meeting was confirmed on Wednesday, September 2, and will also look into the board’s handling of player conditioning ahead of upcoming assignments.

India’s away record in the previous months served as an urgent cause for the evaluation. In June 2026, the team suffered a 2-0 setback in a two-match T20I series in Ireland, bringing an end to the reigning T20 World Cup champions’ 16-game unbeaten streak of over three years.

The subsequent England tour exacerbated matters: India was defeated 4-0 in the five-match T20I series, with a 125-run loss in Nottingham among the more glaring results, before losing the ODI series 2-1.

Following the England and Ireland defeats, board secretary Devajit Saikia indicated that a formal review would be held, but the meeting was not convened immediately, and the reasons for the delay have not been made public.

Why is player injury management a key topic at the meeting?

Fitness and task management are expected to take up a large chunk of the discussions. Several players were unavailable for critical tours, prompting criticism of the board and the Center of Excellence. Bumrah worsened his left knee injury and was ruled out of the Sri Lanka trip; Washington Sundar was also unavailable, while Sai Sudharsan’s recuperation from his own setback took longer than anticipated.

A particularly concerning element is that the selecting committee was allegedly not told on at least one time that Bumrah was unsuitable for a scheduled tour.

The team management has also discussed the IPL workload with the board, expressing concern that players are not always available at full fitness when international commitments begin.

The upcoming Twenty20 International series against Afghanistan emphasises the importance of fitness. Bumrah, Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Harshit Rana are all slated to have fitness tests on September 9, and their positions in the squad are yet unknown.

Hardik Pandya’s long-term availability will also be discussed: the selection committee wants him to be fit for the 2027 World Cup, but his present ODI bowling capacity is only five or six overs each match.

What structural questions surround Agarkar and Laxman ahead of the AGM?

The September 3 meeting will take place against the backdrop of significant administrative uncertainty. Agarkar’s contract as chief selector is set to expire in September 2026, and the BCCI is expected to use the time leading up to its Annual General Meeting on September 18, 2026, to shape the selection system for the next World Cup cycle. The question of whether Agarkar would be extended or replaced remains unsettled, with contradicting reports.

Laxman’s job is also being actively considered. According to reports, he is being considered for a newly established BCCI Director of Cricket position that would enlarge his existing Center of Excellence mandate; however, no appointment has been confirmed, and the actual extent of any such function remains unknown. All three officials attending Thursday’s discussion have their immediate plans focused on India’s trip of New Zealand in 2026 and the 2027 World Cup.
