Pakistan’s opening batsman Imam-ul-Haq suffered a left calf muscle strain while fielding on the first day of the second Test against England at Lord’s on August 27. The injury has called his participation in the remainder of the match into question, with the Pakistan Cricket Board confirming that his eligibility is totally dependent on how he responds to treatment.

The PCB acknowledged the development in an official news release issued on August 28. According to the board, scans conducted following the event revealed a low-grade calf strain, and Imam-ul-Haq is currently receiving treatment from Pakistan’s medical team. No return-to-play date has been set.

What did the scans show concerning Imam-ul-Haq’s calf injury?

The Pakistani medical team has assumed care of his treatment and is closely monitoring his progress. The board has not established a specific schedule for recuperation, so his participation in the remaining days of the second Test is dependent on how swiftly he responds to continuous therapy. The match is set to go until August 31, 2026, giving a short window for any prospective return.

As of August 28, 2026, the PCB had not announced a new opener or made any team adjustments. The board’s statement did not mention a substitute fielder or batting rearrangement, and any such decision will be based on the medical team’s assessment in the following days.

How will Imam-ul-Haq’s absence influence Pakistan’s batting at Lord’s?

Imam-ul-Haq was picked to Pakistan’s playing XI for the second Test, and the team chose to bowl first after winning the toss at Lord’s. With Imam-ul-Haq’s fitness questionable, Pakistan may face a batting order gap for the remainder of the match. He and Azan Awais were scheduled to open the batting for Pakistan, and any disruption to that combination might impact how the team approaches their innings in the coming days.

In Imam’s absence, Shan Masood started for Pakistan, but Jofra Archer removed him for one run. Pakistan conceded 290 after deciding to field first, with half-centuries from Jordan Cox and Jamie Smith, as well as a crucial last-wicket partnership from Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue.
