Bangladesh’s Test coach, Phil Simmons, anticipated that Australia will respond to their opening-match defeat with tactical changes and increased intensity. Simmons spoke after the first Test about his expectations for the second match and the mindset needed to keep Bangladesh on track for victory.
Bangladesh defeated Australia by nine wickets in the first Test in Darwin on August 13-16, 2026, marking a notable result on their first tour to Australia in 23 years.
The two-match series is part of the 2025-2027 ICC World Test Championship. Bangladesh had undergone a rough warm-up phase, including a severe setback in their three-day warm-up match against Australia XI at Marrara Oval in Darwin on August 8, 2026, when they were bowled out for 54 in their second innings and lost by an innings and 38 runs.
Simmons emphasised that Bangladesh understood the nature of Test cricket and the possibility that Australia will make strategic changes following their opening-match defeat.
He underlined the importance of Bangladesh maintaining its existing level of performance or improving incrementally in specific areas to counter Australia’s anticipated response.

He highlighted that the team’s work ethic and approach remained consistent even after the crushing setback against Australia XI, giving him faith in the squad’s resolve to doing well in the series.

Simmons discussed his Test cricket success philosophy, highlighting the necessity of batting time and scoring early in the innings to put other sides on the back foot.
He believed that consistent batting performances would allow Bangladesh to dominate matches and make opponents work harder. Test cricket lasts five days; if my team can bat for 11 hours out of those five, the opposing team must be under pressure.
For me, that’s how I learned Test cricket. You bat, you score. Simmons emphasised the importance of scoring well in the opening inning. Then you put the opposing team under strain. That is what we are attempting to do.
Bat and get huge scores in the first innings, making sure the opposing team has to work hard to obtain those points,” he said.
Simmons acknowledged Bangladesh’s impassioned cricket culture and the difficulty of remaining calm following a huge victory. He noted that the group had relaxed after the first Test and hoped that ongoing mental preparation would help them start the second match on the right foot.
Bangladeshis are emotional. I am not the same, thus I can easily control that. It’s challenging for them, but looking at them today, I think they’ve settled down a lot. We’re hoping for some more settling tomorrow so we can get off to a good start on Saturday,” Simmons concluded.
