Jake Weatherald Dropped as Matt Renshaw Returns Against Bangladesh

Australia has dropped Jake Weatherald and added Matt Renshaw to its 13-man team for the second Test against Bangladesh, which will be played in Mackay. It is the sole personnel change from the team that suffered a crushing defeat in Darwin.

Weatherald scored 23 in the first innings and a duck in the second, bringing his overall record to 224 runs from six matches at an average of 20.36 since appearing in last season’s Ashes. The squad arrangement had formally encompassed both Tests since the start of the series, but the selectors acted fast following the Darwin result.

Renshaw, who will play his 15th Test if he takes the field, last represented Australia at this level in 2023. He had been kept on standby for the series, spending time with the group in a preparatory camp in Brisbane before the Tests began.

Why did Weatherald’s strategy fail to hold up against Bangladesh?

Weatherald used the county cricket off-season to fine-tune his batting technique, and the results were visible in Darwin. He struggled to find his feet in both innings, nicking a drive to the cordon off Hasan Mahmud on day one and dragging a delivery onto his stumps from the same bowler when Australia batted again.

Prior to the selection announcement, Australia coach Andrew McDonald praised Weatherald’s evident changes in approach.

Weatherald, who signed a central contract with Cricket Australia in 2026, had spoken openly about the burden on him prior to the series.

What does Renshaw’s return tell us about Australia’s opening problem?

Renshaw’s Sheffield Shield figures from previous season were impressive, with an average of 49.90 and three centuries. He has also broken into Australia’s white-ball setup, joining the T20 World Cup squad to replace Matt Short. His Test average is 29.31, with a career-best score of 184 against Pakistan in early 2017.

The return highlights how uncertain Australia’s top order has been since David Warner’s retirement in early 2024. Except for Usman Khawaja, who was a regular opener before his final England series, seven different hitters have been asked to fill the position. Travis Head took over the role during the Ashes after Khawaja was hurt in Perth, and he has remained there since, with Steven Smith, Nathan McSweeney, Sam Konstas, Marnus Labuschagne, and Weatherald joining him.

Labuschagne, who scored 1 and 31 in Darwin and was removed in the second innings after missing a full delivery from Taijul Islam, has retained his spot but will under scrutiny in Mackay. Despite Ricky Ponting’s outspoken support for uncapped players like Ollie Peake and Campbell Kellaway, the selectors have not moved to introduce them. Josh Inglis remains a backup batting option, Scott Boland provides fast-bowling cover, and a frontline spinner is expected to be needed at the Mackay venue after Hazlewood got seven wickets in Darwin.

Australia’s squad for the second Test against Bangladesh

Travis Head, Matt Renshaw, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Beau Webster, Pat Cummins (capt), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis, Scott Boland
