Harbhajan Singh, India’s off-spinner who made his debut in 1998, has expressed worries about how modern hitters approach Test cricket. In a recent podcast interview, Harbhajan highlighted a significant shift in how cricket players construct their innings in the longest format. He saw parallels between the present generation, which has been affected by Twenty20 cricket, and the batting philosophy of his playing days.
According to Harbhajan, the way Test cricket is played has changed considerably since the T20 era. The former World Cup winner stated that triple hundreds in Test cricket had become increasingly rare, with very few modern hitters reaching 250 or 300 in an innings.
He emphasised that, compared to his playing days, the patience required to produce long innings has lessened.
“When we first started playing cricket, it was a little slow, but that was typical of the era. There were just a few batsmen who would hit sixes,” Harbhajan told NDTV Sports.

Harbhajan discussed how, beginning in 2001, Australia revolutionised Test cricket strategy by being the first team to consistently aim for quick scores in the longest format.
Their method prompted other countries to reconsider their own tactics and change their bowling plans. Since 2001, Australia has been the only team to score swiftly in Tests, setting a new standard for international cricket.

“So you’ve got to come up with a different strategy and mindset for stacking those dot balls and forcing him to take a different shot. But I suppose the appeal of Test cricket sprang from the games we used to play.
The match would go five days, and on the fifth day, you wouldn’t know which team would win,” Harbhajan remarked.
How modern cricketers now have more opportunities
Harbhajan also discussed how opportunities for young players have changed as a result of the expansion of international cricket formats. Even if they scored well in domestic cricket, many gifted batters were unable to secure a berth in the Indian team due to fiercer competition in prior decades.
The introduction of many formats has increased opportunities for players to represent their country. Previously, it may take up to ten years to qualify for India.
