Ricky Ponting, the leader of Seven’s Darwin Test commentary crew, critiqued both the batting performance and the selection process. The former Australian captain expressed his disappointment with the selectors’ decision to stick with an established team rather than adding younger players during a difficult time.

Australia’s batting struggled on the first day of the first Test against Bangladesh at Darwin’s Marrara Stadium on August 13, 2026. After winning the toss, Pat Cummins chose to bat, however his decision backfired as the hosts were bowled for 198.

Only one other batter reached 25, with Steve Smith leading the batting order with 71. The rest of the order fought valiantly. Bangladesh’s Hasan Mahmud crushed the Australian innings with his best Test stats of 6 for 55. Bangladesh was down by 102 runs after reaching 96 for 1 at stumps.

Australia will play 21 Test matches in the coming year, including a trip to South Africa for the first time in 2018, four home Tests against New Zealand, and a five-Test series in India before the Ashes.

[But] there are a few chinks in the armour right now, so the selectors decided to stick with what they know. At the close of last season, I thot the moment was ripe to try out a couple of young players in these two Test matches. The Times of India reported Ponting’s statement.

Why did selectors prioritise experience over young

Cameron Green, the only squad member under 31 years old, highlighted the group’s age distribution. Ponting identified Ollie Peake and Campbell Kellaway as potential players for the Darwin and Mackay games. “At the end of last year, I said Kellaway and Peake were the ones that I wanted to have,” he added.

Ponting’s concerns with frequent batting errors and timing debuts

Ponting was similarly taken away by Cummins’ decision to bat first on a tricky pitch. The former captain criticised the batting performance, citing technical flaws that went beyond the conditions.

“We were all surprised,” Ponting said. “What I’ve seen today is just the same mistakes being made again, particularly by some of our top-order players.” He found that Weatherald’s expulsion was due to an over-intent to score from balls that weren’t quite there.

These recurring dismissal patterns indicated that shot selection and discipline were more crucial in determining the outcome than pitch conditions.
