On August 8, 2026, the Kerala government granted official approval to build an international-standard cricket stadium in Kochi, marking a huge step forward for the state’s cricket infrastructure. The Agriculture Department cleared 10.13 hectares of land in Chengamanad village, Aluva taluk, near Cochin International Airport, for the purpose.

The approval was granted under Section 10(2) of the Kerala Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetlands Act of 2008. Authorities designated the stadium as a public-purpose project, citing the Kerala Sports Policy 2023, the Kerala Sports Act 2025, and the Kerala Sports Infrastructure Development Scheme 2025. The decree also includes severe environmental and water conservation requirements that must be followed prior to and throughout construction.

Who moved the Kochi stadium project forward?

The Kerala Cricket Association proposed the Kochi Sports City to the state government on January 23, 2024. Beyond cricket, the project is intended to include facilities for other sports, giving it a larger scope than just a dedicated cricket site.

Jayesh George, who was the KCA president when the Kochi Sports City plan was presented in January 2024 and currently leads the Women’s Premier League, was important in securing BCCI approval for the project. ICC chairman Jay Shah visited the proposed location during an IPL auction trip to Kerala and is said to have issued development orders, tho the specifics have yet to be officially confirmed.

Sreejith V Nair, president of the Kerala Cricket Association, hailed the government move as a watershed moment for the sport. KCA secretary Vinod S Kumar stated that the association will guarantee that any building activity conforms with the environmental standards outlined in the government directive.

What happens next with the Kochi Stadium?

BCCI executives and members of the board’s infrastructure committee are anticipated to visit the Chengamanad site in the near future, however no precise date has been set. That visit will be important in transitioning the project from official permission to detailed design and ultimate implementation.

The site’s proximity to Cochin International Airport in Aluva taluk is viewed as a significant logistical benefit for holding international fixtures, due to the ease of travel for visiting teams and spectators. The environmental circumstances associated with the clearance must be properly addressed in the entire project report before any groundwork may commence.
