Bangladesh’s head coach, Phil Simmons, pondered on the poor performance as the team prepared for the first Test against Australia, which is set to begin on August 13. The warm-up match revealed substantial batting weaknesses that need immediate adjustment before the series began.

On August 8, 2026, Bangladesh suffered a devastating defeat in a three-day warm-up match against Australia XI at Marrara Oval in Darwin. The touring team was bowled out for 54 in the second innings, losing by an innings and 38 runs to CA XI, who produced 355 in response to Bangladesh’s 263 in the first.

The collapse occurred in just 17 overs on the third morning, with only Tanzid Hasan reaching double figures with 22 runs. Campbell Thompson, a left-arm fast, took 8 for 25 and finished the match with two wickets in two balls.

Campbell Thompson’s Match-winning Performance

Campbell Thompson, a 22-year-old from South Australia with only one first-class encounter under his belt, performed a match-winning effort that demonstrated his promise at the top level. His outstanding bowling performance against a Test team just days before the series provided invaluable experience and exposure to international cricket.

Simmons encourages Bangladesh to recover before the test.

Simmons was confident that Bangladesh would use the remaining time before the Test to solve their batting issues and adequately prepare for the series. With four days between the warm-up match and the first Test, the head coach felt his side had enough time to work on their technical and tactical approaches.

Taijul Islam expects to be fit for the first Test.

Taijul Islam, Bangladesh’s primary spinner, had a finger injury while batting on the opening day but is likely to heal in time for the first Test. Physio Bayjedul Islam Khan gave a promising report on the player’s condition, stating that swelling and pain have greatly diminished since the incident.
