Mohammad Kaif has spoken out about Rohit Sharma‘s current situation following his game-winning effort at Lord’s on July 19, 2026. In the third ODI, Rohit scored an undefeated 138 as India chased 388, but England won by 27 runs to win the series 2-1. Rohit scored his maiden century of 2026 and 34th century in the format during the innings, which included 17 fours and five sixes off 84 deliveries.

Kaif stressed that the team management had made no explicit public statements on Rohit’s future. The coach has considered enabling Rohit to play his natural style, but there has been no official statement about his inclusion in the 2027 World Cup plans.

Members of the coaching staff occasionally come out and say, ‘We have allowed Rohit Sharma complete license to play his natural game.’ But no one has made a clear statement declaring, ‘Rohit Sharma is part of our preparations for the 2027 World Cup.

‘ That statement also has to be made. Rohit Sharma’s form will naturally fluctuate up and down. He may have a poor series, but management must state that it stands behind him. Along with allowing him independence, they should make it apparent that they support him.

On his YouTube channel, Kaif stated that the lack of a clear declaration has caused confusion and distrust. We are seated outside, so we don’t know exactly what is going on inside. But it looks to me that Rohit Sharma has determined that he will not leave on his own,” he said.

How is his latest retirement different from his previous ones?

Kaif also discussed the BCCI’s role and speculations surrounding the Lord’s match. The game could be Rohit Sharma’s final One-Day International, according to reports. He has made the choice twice. According to reports, the Lord’s match could be his final ODI. There was a question mark next to it.

However, when such stories surface, they have the potential to grow significantly. The BCCI did an excellent job in issuing a statement before the Lord’s match. That intervention marked a turning point. According to Kaif, there may still be confusion among selectors over whether to keep him or not.

However, no final decision has been announced. “Rohit Sharma should now have entire freedom to play his game. The BCCI’s announcement assured that the whole focus at Lord’s shifted back to cricket. Otherwise, every image would have sparked further suspicion.

People would have assumed, ‘Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are sitting together and looking really serious, hence this must be Rohit Sharma last match.’

Those rumors would have spread farther. The BCCI halted that narrative at the appropriate time. “The BCCI secretary came forward and made a statement, and he deserves credit for it,” he said.

Rohit became the first male Indian batsman to score a century in an ODI at Lord’s. Shubman Gill, India’s captain, has previously stated that Rohit did not inform the squad of his decision to leave the format.

Rohit’s long-term success, as well as the management’s explicit statements about his involvement in upcoming tournaments, will most likely determine how he is chosen in future.
