Ishan Kishan said India resisted the temptation to score 250 after losing two early wickets in the second T20I against Zimbabwe, instead focusing on assessing the pitch and forming a partnership that laid the groundwork for a commanding 90-run victory in Harare on Saturday.
Walking in after India had fallen to 29 for 2 in the first three overs, Kishan hit 81 off 44 balls and combined 66 with captain Shreyas Iyer before Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 60 off 29 balls propelled India to 219 for 5.
India won the series 2-0 with one game remaining after bowling Zimbabwe out for 129 in 17.5 overs. As a No. 3 batter, your duty is to observe the ball and play your natural game.
After being selected Player of the Match, Kishan emphasised the importance of understanding the wicket. There were several discussions about whether we wanted to end up with 250 or 230 runs, or if the wicket was only capable of producing 170 to 180 runs. So we had it in mind when Shreyas Iyer arrived. We wanted to form a partnership and extend the innings. I believe we performed it pretty well.”
Kishan emphasised that his job at No. 3 differs from that of India’s aggressive opening duo, and he does not prioritise outside impressions of his batting style.
“I don’t give so much focus on what’s happening outside,” he stated. “I know how I need to play. What’s important is to stay in the moment and not worry about what’s going on in the outside world, like who’s getting more or who’s hitting harder.
Everyone on the team can have that image. However, as a No. 3 batsman, you must grasp what is most vital when two wickets are down. Do you keep taking chances, or do you form a partnership? Is it easy to hit? You have to comprehend the wicket and play accordingly.
Kishan also acknowledged the challenge of India’s rigorous itinerary, which included two T20Is against Ireland in June, a five-match T20I series and three ODIs in England, and a trip to Zimbabwe for the current series.
Despite securing the series, Kishan stated that the team will prioritise rehabilitation before the final T20I on Sunday. “It’s obviously very difficult,” he explained. “You play a lot of matches in England.”
We started in Ireland and moved to Zimbabwe, where we played a match the next day. It’s never easy being an athlete. You want to give your all every time you play, and you won’t settle for anything less.
We have no alternative except to allow you to recover and then proceed to the next game with your full effort. “It was important to prioritise sleep and nutrition before the next game. “Now it’s simply a matter of recuperating well, since playing back-to-back games is never easy, especially for bowlers.”
