Kaif Backs Nervous Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Ahead of Zimbabwe Series

Before the Zimbabwe T20I series, teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may be concerned, but former India batsman Mohammad Kaif believes that a strong innings of 50–60 runs may be just what the young opener needs to regain confidence after a challenging tour of England.

Sooryavanshi made his India Twenty20 International debut against England, hitting 14 runs off 10 balls, however England won by four wickets. In the Under-19 World Cup final against England at Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe, the teenager struck 175 runs off only 80 balls.

This series will take place at the same location. The gap between his stunning youth performances and his cautious international debut has created both anticipation and scepticism.

“Vaibhav Suryavanshi had an opportunity, but he did not make a significant score. He would also like to contribute to the team because he is a class batter. It is an incredible accomplishment to win the Orange Cap in the IPL as a 15-year-old. Right now, he may be nervous. If he can score 50-60 runs, he will shine.

He has a fantastic talent, there is no doubt about it,” Kaif told Cricbuzz.

From July 23 to 26, 2026, India will play three Twenty20 Internationals against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club. After a great IPL 2026 season, the left-handed hitter became the youngest Orange Cap holder in history, aged 15 years and 65 days. However, his domestic success has failed to translate to the international stage.

India’s dismal performance places pressure on skipper Shreyas Iyer.

As India’s captain, Iyer has lost all seven of his previous games and has not won one. India suffered a 2-0 loss to Ireland in their debut bilateral series, which was exacerbated by the England visit.

Shreyas Iyer had a losing streak in the second half of IPL 2026 before taking over as captain. Then he was given the opportunity to lead India; before that, he was not even on the team. “He came into the team as captain, which has never happened in Indian cricket history,” Kaif explained.

“Now, after losing against Ireland, which no one expected India to lose, and then losing to England, the captain is under the most pressure. At the very least, get off the mark; we can’t even start right now. We will run the marathon, but we will not even make it past the 100-meter mark. So, that weight will be there,” he explained.

Sooryavanshi and Iyer have a chance to turn things around on African soil in the Zimbabwe series, but as India attempts to win for the first time in four months, expectations grow with each game.
