Aakash Chopra believes that if India does not want to use Washington Sundar’s bowling abilities, Tilak Varma should be included in the ODI squad.
Sundar played in the first two One-Day Internationals against England. He just bowled four overs in the first ODI and did not bowl again in the second. Tilak, India’s Twenty20 International vice-captain, was not included in the ODI selection.
Chopra questioned if Tilak’s status in T20I cricket is certain, given that his performance against spin has deteriorated significantly, and Rajat Patidar has been offered as an alternative.
Aakash Chopra remarked of Washington Sundar’s deployment in ODIs, “Tilak will also bowl as many overs.”
“I am very curious because when Tilak is playing, it’s asked why he is being played and why he has been made the vice-captain, as his numbers against spin have become bad, and that he should be dropped and Rajat Patidar should be brought in his place,” he said.
Former India opener believes Tilak may outperform Tamil Nadu all-rounder Sundar in ODI cricket if Sundar bowls a limited number of overs. Washi’s name is there, and he has plenty of opportunities to play.
He is usually expected to bat, and he delivers as a hitter rather than as a bowler. It’s a good question because if you’re looking for a batter who can bowl a few overs, Tilak can do the same, and he’ll bat better than Washi,” he remarked.
Chopra believes that because Tilak was selected India’s T20I vice-captain, the Indian selectors may have more faith in him and draft him into the ODI squad. A former cricket player who is now an analyst believes India’s ODI team will experience substantial changes in the coming months.
“If he is your T20I vice-captain, why not invest a little more faith in Tilak’s abilities and make him a part of ODIs as well?” I believe that is also possible. “I believe we will see a lot of changes until 2027, with players coming and going,” Chopra stated.
