Shai Hope, the West Indies captain, has recognised the difficulties associated with travelling to India as his team prepares for the first ODI of the three-match series in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27, 2026. The West Indies, who are currently ranked tenth in the world, will be visiting India to play against a team that has dominated bilateral cricket against them for the past twenty years. Hope’s team includes seasoned athletes Alzarri Joseph and Roston Chase, as well as newcomers on their inaugural national tour.
Shai Hope contemplated the challenges that were to come prior to the inaugural contest. The West Indies have not won a bilateral series against India in 20 years, and they last won a series on Indian territory 24 years ago. Shai Hope has been the most outstanding player in ODI cricket for the West Indies since the commencement of 2025. He has amassed the highest total of 869 runs in the format for a West Indies batsman during that period, with an average of 51.11.
Adapting to the conditions in India
Shai Hope has a proven track record in India. He amassed 512 runs, including two fifties and two hundreds, and averaged 56.88 in 11 ODIs played in the nation. He is well-versed in the conditions of India, in contrast to several of the travelling team members who are making their first visit. Hope acknowledged that the strategy required for playing in India differs from that of other regions.
Providing younger athletes with additional experience
Shai Hope expressed confidence in the junior members of the squad and their capacity to acquire knowledge from the tour. The West Indies have only won six of 22 ODIs since the beginning of 2025, which is indicative of their lack of consistency in recent years.

Shai Hope, on the other hand, believes that the exposure of novice players to competing against India could expedite their development.
Hope expressed her resolve to terminate the cycle, despite acknowledging the statistical realities of the West Indies. The West Indies’ failure to automatically qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup provides the series with an additional impetus, as the team is scheduled to participate in the ICC qualification event early next year.
